Rex recalled he was recruited by Manby who he remembered as the Sergeant at the time although this isn't recorded. He was interrogated by the local Home Guard Captain as to why he was not playing his part in the Home Guard.
Later in life he was asked if he was interested in applying for the Defence Medal; " I don't see the purpose in hanging bits of metal on ribbons".
