Operation Gain involved 58 men of the SAS being dropped into the area around Orleans. The first drop was on 13 Jun 1944 with the operation concluding two months later on 19 Aug. Its role was to sabotage the rail links running through the area and prevent German supplies passing through. They were also effective in tying down German forces, but were caught in a number of ambushes, with ten men dying including commander Major Fenwick. The remainder linked up with the advancing US Forces in mid August.
Operation Gain is the subject of a forthcoming book by CART’s Andrew Chatterton. “The Last Recruits” is due to be published by Bloomsbury in Mar 2027.
