Grocer's apprentice
While in Auxiliary Units there was an old WW1 Major that used to come into the store where he worked and ask in a loud voice why a young man like him had not signed up. He kept doing it so Alan had to report it and the Major got a quiet visit. After that the Major would come into the shop and wink at Alan. Alan always said the winking was worse than the question in the loud voice in front of the customers.
He was discharged and joined Royal Welch Fusiliers 15 April 1943. It is believed he was in the 1st Battalion and then 2nd Battalion as part of the occupation forces in Japan. He returned home in 1947 as a WO2.
His date of birth is recorded on the nominal roll as 1922.
The attached picture of Alan was taken in Japan.
With links to Locks Heath and Park Gate it would be safe to assume that he was Group 6.
