Stable Yard & Buildings

The new arrivals were billeted on the first floor of the Stable Block. This was used as both a dormitory and for lectures.  There was no electricity which meant late arrivals often groped around in the poor light. Tales were told of Auxiliers having a smoke before bed, only to wake the next morning to find “No Smoking” signs and that the seat they had chosen was a box of grenades!

The Motor Transport Office and Sergeants quarters were at the end of the building near the entrance.  In the corner on the ground floor are two sets of double doors. This was home to the NAAFI and where ENSA concert parties put on occasional shows. On the first floor above this was the Camp Commandant’s office, the Royal Engineers Office, the orderly room and the typist room.
