Station description

The 184th Special Tunnelling Group were billeted in Wheatley Hill in 1942 and during the time, constructed several OBs in the immediate district. An internal military memo (marked SECRET) dated 10 October 1942, exists in the unit’s war diary to the effect that a ‘sketch plan’ was found in a house called ‘Valdigarth’ in Granville Terrace. This was realised to be a sensitive document and was therefore handed in at the Headquarters of Durham Police.

'Valdigarth' was the home of Dr McLean.
