The son of Christopher Carruthers and Mary Graham, he was born at Arthur's Place, Drysdale, Dumfriesshire. On 23 Dec 1904 in Lockerbie, he married Isabella Schoolar and they had seven children. Birthday notices record the family living at Forrest Lodge, Dalry throughout the war. This was the gamekeeper's house for the Forrest estate of Sir John Wood, of Hengrave Hall, Suffolk. In 1941, the family was selling a BSA 3 seater car and in 1945, a 1936 Morris 8 Saloon, though which member of the family they belonged to is unclear.

Factor & Gamekeeper
Originally the Patrol Sergeant for Dalry Patrol he was promoted to Lieutenant then and Captain as Area Commander for Groups 4a, 4b and 4c all west side of Scottish Borders, and Group Commander of Group 4c.
While still a Lieutenant, he was responsible for organising a dance at Parton in early 1944, with members of the Auxiliary Units. This raised £9 2/6 for the Prisoners of War Fund of the Scottish Red Cross
