The son of Edward and Ellen Hudson he married Dorothy Alderton in 1937. He was not called up into the forces as he had a serious motorcycle accident that had left him in a coma in the 1930s. He recovered somewhat but was declared medically unfit.
He worked with his brother Les in a solicitor's office and they sometimes undertook private research for their father Edward who was a Detective Chief Inspector with the Ipswich Police. Spending Summer holidays on their Grandparents farm, they learned to shoot rabbits and pigeons, made hides with pollard trees and trained in farming, slaughtering and being self sufficient.
