The son of John and Elsie, after leaving school at 14, he became one of the biggest hop farmers having over 100 acres of hopyards in Tenbury, Worcester, Whitwick Manor, to name a few. However he also had a dairy herd of 200 cows as well as sheep, and in later life, turkeys plus other arable crops. He was known as Farmer Pudge.
Farmer married Sheila Parker, daughter of another hop farming family in 1946 at Bredenbury. He was the brother-in-law of Auxilier Edward George Lewis.

Hop farmer
His 1939 ID is recorded on the nominal roll as BSU 919.
His obituary said that "During the war, farmer was part of the 202 Battalion concerned with security matters". Just a tiny clue that he had been a member of Auxiliary Units.
