Alan was a Shopkeeper, his older brother Norman was also in the patrol.
He was known in Ness as “Buth Allan John”, being a familiar figure in Donald Smith Stores, later known as Lionel Stores.

Career
Allan Smith was initially a private in the Patrol, but on a list dated 26 Mar 1943, he is shown as Sergeant.
He left the Patrol later in the war, possibly in April 1943 as call up restrictions were lifted, initially joining the RAF, before transferring to the Army. In 1944/5, tens of thousands of RAF personnel were transferred to the infantry.
