Biography

He lived and worked with Archibald Blake and his wife at The Stores in South Walsham. In Apr 1943, aged 46, he married Olive Mildred Tooke.

After the war, he took over Blake's Stores on the death of the previous owner and ran it until he retired in 1953. He was a member of the British Legion and the Silver Thread Circle. He died at home and was buried in St Mary's Churchyard in South Walsham.

During the First World War he enlisted as Private 88463 in the Norfolk Regiment and after several transfers served as a Sergeant in 22nd Manchester Regiment before being discharged in 1920. His service record describes him as 5 foot 6 1/2 inches tall, with a 33 inch chest. Signing up in Mar 1916, he landed in France on 12 Jul 1917 with the 13th Essex Battalion. Shortly aftewr he was sent to the South Staffordshire Regiment After the war he was sent to Egypt. He finally returned home on HMT Himalaya, leaving Alexandria on 18 Mar 1920, prior to demobilisation.

It is believed that he served in the South Walsham Home Guard in the Second World War. During exercises he came across the South Walsham Operational Base under construction and was sworn to secrecy, being recruited to the Patrol.
