He was the son of Mr and Mrs Alexander MacLeod of the same address. He was known as Tormod from his Gaelic name, Tormod Alasdair lan Chlachair.
He trained as a shipwright in Glasgow and worked at sea as a ship’s carpenter at times.
His family were widely dispersed. At the time of his death, his brother Kenny was still in Stornoway, his sister Anna in North Uist and another sister Curstag in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe. His son Alexander John had died in an accident in Bulaweyo in 1956 and his brother Roderick in Transvaal. Norman died in the same town having left Stornoway over a decade earlier. His daughter Margaret had married John William Powell there in 1966.
