Biography

Norman was the brother of Alan Smith who was also in the Patrol.

On 19 Mar 1959 he married Christina Macleod of 2 Lionel in a service at Greyfriars Church, Inverness. His brother Donald Smith was best man. The reception was held at the Douglas Hotel. Their daughter Margaret was born on 20 May 1960.

He spent 43 years as Secretary to the Ness Cemetery Committee, retiring in Aug 1998.

Career

His does not appear in a Patrol list dated 27 Oct 1942, but is in another dated 26 Mar 1943. 

Norman was called up and was captured spending time as a POW, possibly in The Netherlands.

There is a Norman Smith from Lewis who was interviewed for the 1991 TV Series, Scotland’s War, who served in the Reconnaissance Corps at Anzio. He was captured spending time as a prisoner of war. It is unclear if this is the same man.
