Career

Ernest Sidney Read (often known by his second name) was born on 1 Sep 1896 at Melton and worked as a porter at Melton Railway Station. He enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment on 26 Apr 1915 (Service No 18891) and was posted with the 7th Suffolk’s to France on 22 Dec 1915. During his service he was wounded twice and after the second wounding he was posted to join the Labour Corps (Service No 597116) and was discharged on 23 Mar 1919.

Sidney joined the Home Guard and then the Great Bealings Patrol, where he was Corporal. His next-door neighbour in Boot Street, Henry Stemp, was the Sergeant. Sid died on 18 Mar 1971 and like many men at the time kept his secret to the grave.
