He was the son of former Provost DAM Ross of Adnamara, Invergordon and Agnes, née Smith. On 19 Feb 1953 he married Sheanah Craigen, a Registered General Nurse at Ness Bank Church of Scotland, Inverness. They had two children. She was the Captain of the Invergordon Girl Guides and he the Assistant District Commissioner of Scouts at the time.
He was a member of Invergordon Town council, until in 1952 he was elected to Ross and Cromaty County Council, serving there for 10 years.
He was a keen sailor and member of the Invergordon Yacht Club. He was an active member of the Scout movement, becoming District Commissioner. He was an elder of Fearn Parish Church. He also was on the committee for the Invergordon Highland Gathering.
