Born in Bowes Park, Middlesex to Reginald and Millie Stevens he married Ivy May Withers on 7 Dec 1934 at Hinton Charterhouse.
Driver Stevens, along with Durston, made a toy lorry for Captain Edmundson's young son William.
Edmundson remembered him as a very cultured man, working in his father's furniture and antique shop in Plympton.

On enlistment he was posted to No 1 Company, No 3 Training Battalion (Drivers) Royal Army Service Corps at Bulford.
30 Jul 1941 he was posted to Auxiliary Units in Devon. On 12 Dec 1941 he was granted Wartime Proficiency Pay.
On 17 Feb 1942 he was attached to 187 Pioneer Company for pay, rations and discipline at Callington. He was admitted to the Casualty Reception Station at Taunton from 13 to 15 Jan 1943.
15 Jun 1944 he was reclassified from Driver Class I to Class IA. His location at that time was Liskeard, where the headquarters had moved in Nov 1943. Captain Dingley signed this entry.
He was posted to 1 Mobilisation centre RASC on 7 Oct 1944, one of the last regular soldiers to leave Auxiliary Units in Cornwall. He was transferred to 840 Company RASC, sailing for the Mediterranean on 4 Nov 1944. He was posted to 1 Light Field Ambulance for a week prior to coming home from Italy on 22 May 1945. On their return, this unit was converted to become 1 Medical Commando Royal Army Medical Corps (Light). On 28 Aug 1945 the unit was disbanded as the Commando units they had been created to support had been stood down with the end of the war.
He was sent to the Middle East a month later, joining 281 Company RASC. He arrived back in the UK on 20 Feb 1946.
He was discharged from the army on 30 Mar 1946. At discharge his conduct was described as "Exemplary".
