Jack Steward was a regular, having enlisted in 1930. He had served in India, returning to the U.K. shortly before war broke out. He had been born in Haughley in Suffolk and grew up in the county.
While based at Mill House, he met Doris Edna Whayman Chilver, whom he married on 8 Aug 1941, having daughter Olive in 1942. A son, Rowly followed in 1943. After the war they lived just a few hundred yards from Mill House at 2 Council House, Cransford.
On completion of his time with Auxiliary Units he was subsequently attached to the Royal West African Frontier Force. He served in the Burma campaign. He was promoted to Colour Sergeant.
