Ken worked as a Machine Minder at the Grimsby Evening Telegraph print works, both before and after the war for a total of 49 years. In 1948 he married Doreen G Powell and they had five children. He played for the works cricket team and was a regular supporter of Grimsby Town Football Club.

Ken's Army number lies between two known members of the South Lincolnshire Scout Section. This made it very likely he was a member as he was also one of handful of men to join the SAS from this regiment, and it is known that they recruited from former Scout Section members. His service record released in Oct 2026 confirms that he served with Auxiliary Units, with a Scout Section. He joined direct from the depot (7 ITC) in Lincoln on 23 Oct 1940, one of the original recruits. He remained attached to 7 ITC for pay and discipline, indicating that the section was based in Lincoln. He had leave for a week between 27 Jun and 4 Jul 1942.
29 Aug 1942 In common with other Scout Section members he was attached to 143 Infantry Brigade for rations until 10 Jan 1943 when this returned to 7 ITC
When the Scout Sections were being reduced in size in Apr 1943, he was transferred back to 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment stationed in Hereford. He was recruited from there to 1 SAS on 1 Feb 1944, giving up his rank of Lance Corporal to do so. He joined C Squadron.
18 Aug 1944 Deployed to North west Europe on operations by plane, remaining there until 7 Mar 1945. He returned on 6 Apr as part of Operation Howard.
