Samuel Wells was one of the older Patrol members. In the First World War he had been a sail maker and rigger for aeroplanes (which of course had doped canvas wings at that time). His son was serving in the Army during the Second World War and afterwards served in Kenya as part of the Mau Mau conflict, before settling in South Africa.
