Biography

The daughter of Albert and Jane (nee Inglis) she was born at Charlton, Kent, where he father was posted at the time - being regular Army his children were born in several different places including India. She married Alexander Harper in 1958 and died in Majorca. 

In 1923/4 she was living in Devon, where she passed exams at Trinity College of Music, Torquay. In the 1939 Register she is in Bournemouth, her occupation is described as 'pianist'.

11 Dec 1939 She enrolled in the ATS in the ranks. 

Jan 1940 Posted to Bovington, then to Blandford. Promoted Corporal.

30 Nov 1940 Promoted Sergeant.

1941 Various postings including Lincoln, East Grinstead. OCTU Edinburgh.

15 Jan 1942 Commissioned. Posted to Highworth.

1 Feb 1942 Beatrice Temple visited her at Lincoln.

13 Sept 1942 There is a record of her having sustained injuries in a cycling accident in Highworth when she is listed as Subaltern.

Dec1942 she was posted to Catterick, Yorkshire.

19 Aug 1943 Promoted Junior Commander. Posted Belfast.

15 June 1944 Posted to Darlington, Durham Group.

8 Oct 1944 Posted to Canada.

March 1945 She was in Canada in January 1945 but then sent to Whitby.

6 Nov 1945 Posted to Egypt, to Alexandria, Abbassia, Syria and Palestine.

01 Jan 1946 Awarded in New Years Honours List. Medals listed as 1939-45 Star, 1939-45 War Medal.

8 Dec 1946 Her commission was relinquished with the honorary rank of Junior Commander. At that time she was on the staff of Burma Signals Command S.E A.C.

10 June 1948 Invested MBE (Military) at Government House Singapore by His Excellency Governor Limson.

30 Dec 1950 honorary Captain Alma Vernon HILDYARD, M.B.E. (225126) late A.T.S., Emergency Commission to be Lieutenant 30 Dec 1950, retaining the honorary rank of Captain Lieutenant (War Subs. Maj.).
