Andrew was the younger son of Mr and Mrs James Sutherland. He had left school aged 12 for employment at the brickworks. After wartime in the Royal Navy, he worked on as a stoker on drifters fishing from Buckie. Returning to Brora in 1938, he started work at Brora Colliery, remaining there until he retired in 1961 He was married to Lydia Ann Ollay Cooper, from Orkney, in 1919 and they had one daughter, Catherine Richardson, who lived in Kettering at the time of his death. He is buried in Clyne New Cemetery.

Coal Miner
He enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 Nov 1912, as A4612, giving his profession at the time as fisherman. He was recorded as being 5 foot 4 & 3/4 inches tall with blue eyes, a gair complexion and a dot tattood on the back of the right thumb. At the time of enlistment he was recorded as needing 20 teeth extracted!
There were two A Sutherlands recruited to the Patrol. Andrew has been identified by the address of his family home which remained unchanged throughout his life.
