Arthur was discharged from Auxiliary Units to join the Royal Navy 21st January 1943. He became a Chief Engineer Petty Officer and was Mentioned in Dispatches for his skill and leadership in the engine room in many actions in enemy waters.

In 1921 he was working as a 17 year old chauffeur for Dr Manning in Barnstaple. In 1926 he married Annie Knill. 

Post war he lived at Cross Park, Stratton, Cornwall.
