The sons of Herbert and Florence, Charles and Sidney Haines were brothers. Their father served in WW1 in the Royal Norfolk Regiment and later the Bedfordshire Regiment. He seems to have died in 1927 and his wife remarried a Daniel Clabberton the same year, after his wife died in 1926.
Their mother was from Rangoon, Myanmar (Burma). There were 3 sons and a daughter who married an American and moved to USA post war. Charles George Haines was the eldest brother and was the Patrol Leader and Sid was the Corporal. On the nominal roll, Charles Haines is listed as Sergeant but has a pencil written annotation of "pte" next to it and Sid Haines is listed as Corporal but has a similar hand annotated note next to it saying "Sgt". On the Stand down list of leaders, drawn up by Major Hancock, it shows Charles as the Patrol Leader.

Capstan lathe worker at Laurence-Scott Electrical Works
Charles was a 26 year old engineer at Laurence Scott when approached to join the Auxiliary Units. He had been in the Army Cadets and been fairly good at boxing. Charles specialized in unarmed combat and map reading.
