Colin came from an Aberdeenshire farming family. Before moving to Hampshire they had previously farmed near Abergavenny in Wales, before moving to Wield Manor. He spent most of the war at Hurst Farm.
Whilst at Hurst Farm they developed a Jersey herd. He married Nancy Pratt in 1956. In 1963, looking for more land to graze his cattle, he moved to Pencraig farm in Dyfed. Sadly his wife died just years after they retired from farming. He then dedicated himself to fundraising for the new Intensive Care Unit at West Wales Glangwili Hospital

His obituary described his wartime service service as being with a “Young farmers unit of the Home Guard”, suggesting he kept the full details of his service a secret to the end.
