He is now thought unlikely to have been a Scout Section member, since he had the Africa Star for service with the 8th Army and is known to have been with the SRS in Italy in 1943. He had enlisted with the Royal Scots prior to going to North Africa, possibly with a Commando unit. He served with the SAS in 1944 on Operation Haggard.
