Biography

The son of David Treasure, owner Gelli Haf colliery near Fleur-de-Lis, and his wife Leah (nee Jenkins), he became a solicitor with a practice in Pengam. In 1905, while still only an articled clerk, he travelled to the United States to represent a client there. By 1912 he was practicising with his own firm at Blackwood. He was known as "DJ" to distinguish from the other Davids in the family. In 1923 he was appointed Coroner for South Monmouthshire, taking over over the role for the whole county in 1953, before passing the role on to his son Kenneth Treasure in 1958, remaining deputy coroner.

His involvement is known from a signature on a letter he sent to Elsie Rees, who worked for his Solicitor's firm, and also a member of Special Duties. In this he asks for any papers and expenses claims to be returned to him, indicating that he was the "Key Man" organising this network of Special Duties civilians. He may even have been a Group Commander, in charge of the wider area and personnel for several networks.

It was initially thought that the signature might be that of Colonel Kenneth Treasure, his son, but a review of family documents by his grandson confirms that it was David J Treasure who signed. As his son was involved in many other aspects of the solicitors firm, later becoming coroner and having been an officer, it is just possible that he was also involved, though it is thought that he was overseas in the Army during the war.Colonel Kenneth Treasure was a well known member of Newport Golf Club after the war, which itself included a Special Duties wireless set. No links between the wartime Goof Club and DJ Treasure have been identified to date.
