He married Beryl Anderson in 1931. On 9 Sep 1952 he was appointed Noble Archdruid of the Trafalgar Lodge of the Ancient Order of Druids in a ceremony at North Walsham. In 1953, after the terrible flooding on the coast, he organised two coaches to take 51 volunteers to Sea Palling to fill sandbags to bolster the 300 foot breach in the sea defences.
He was a player for, and later chair, of the North Walsham Cricket Club. In 1957 he was made an honorary Life Member, shortly before leaving the town to move up the road to Mundesley. There his interests switched to Bowls.
