Born in Klerksdorp in South Africa he returned to Sarah, his mothers native Cornwall when she was widowed. He married Dora A Hoskin in 1920.

In WW1 he first joined the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry as Private 202281 and later joined the 1st Wiltshire Regiment as Private 204297. He was captured at Messines 10 April 1918 and held as a prisoner of war, returning to England in Dec 1918. He was awarded the Victory and British medals.
