His son Lyle recalled; "All he told me about his service was that he was in 202 Commando a secret underground unit, and his cover as I understand was as a Machine Gun Instructor at RAF Rochford. He further told me that he was sworn to secrecy and could not tell me what he had to do.

He served with the Surrey Yeomanry Queen Mary's Regiment on the Western Front and in Salonika in WW1. He told me that his role was to ride ahead of the advancing  British Forces when a village was sighted and if he was shot at he would gallop back to the British Lines report what had happened and the Artillery would blast the village".

He served as Private 45626 from 16 Dec 1914 to 13 June 1919 stationed in Salonika, Greece. He spent much of the Autumn of 1916 in hospital suffering from malaria.
