Biography

George was born on the 30th of October 1874 to shepherd John and Barbara (Gunn).

George, age 31, was a crofter and married Mary Stewart, who was a housekeeper, on the 22nd of March 1904 in Rogart.

George served with the Lovat Scouts in the Boer War and WW1 with the Lovat Scouts. Known by the bynames ‘Geordan’, ‘Moses’ and ‘Geordie’.

He was a piper, and is mentioned here

They had a son Eric who died aged 8 Months in 1940.

George was in the Sutherland Home Guard. The photo on this page of Grandson George, was the son of James Stewart Murray.

On the 6th of October 1944, in the John O'Groat Journal, it was reported that George's eldest son, Private Lachlan MacInnes Stewart Murray, was killed in Action (Battle of Rimini - Italy). The article went on to say George served in two wars with the Lovat Scouts but was too old to serve when WW2 broke out, so he joined the Home Guard.

His other son, Donald Eric Francis Murray, died in a hospital in Edinburgh on the 27th of April 1946 due to a severe illness he contracted during the war. He was listed as a Gamekeeper, and the entry in the register was signed by his brother, Alexander Murray.

George was recorded talking about illicit whisky distillers; he can be heard here.

George is buried with his family at St Mirren's (Cladh Maireannach) Burial Ground. He died at the age of 81 on the 1st of July 1956 at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The entry is sign by a John Murray - Son. There was at least one sister.

Also listed on the Family Stone is George Malcolm Murray, who passed away in 1982 at the age of 67 and Alexander S Murray, age 75 who passed away in 1995.  There is also another brother listed in 1946 when Donald died - James.
