Gordon was William’s son-in-law, having married his eldest daughter Lillian. They had two children who were both born during the war and he was aged 40 when the Patrol was formed. Gordon, who had attended Portsmouth Grammar School, had the tenancy of Drews Farm, near Rowlands Castle, so he also had intimate knowledge of the local area.
