After the war Jack Chew and John Tunstall ran a garage together off North Street, Cheddar. John was also friendly with Auxilier Kenneth Frape.
He married Ethel Croker in December 1939. The couple took in evacuees during the war. Ethel was the daughter of Auxilier Lewis Croker of Compton Bishop Patrol.
He reportedly didn't receive the Defence Medal, or a Stand Down badge. The magnets issued to him are still in use in his great nephew's garage.
In 2025 the family were able to apply for his Defence Medal as were able to prove his service.
