A WW1 veteran he served as Driver 209459 in 97 Field Company Royal Engineers serving in Salonika, Russia where he suffered from many bouts of Malaria. He is recorded as being 5 foot 3 inches tall. A newspaper article reporting his release from hospital states "Mr Whittle has seen 3 years service in the Army and had a very trying experience and also some very narrow escapes during a long period of service in Solonika".
In later life he and his wife enjoyed amateur dramatics.
