In 1925 he married Doris Ann Aconley in York. They had a son, Derek. In 1934 they moved to Whin Hill Farm, from Luddith Farm, North Grimston.

During the First World War he served in the 21st Battalion, The Manchester Regiment with number 58411. He was awarded the War Medal and Victory Medal. His medal ribbons can be seen on the wartime photo of the group.
