A WW1 veteran he was in Pioneer 538621 Royal Engineers 2nd Signals Company signing up on 14 Nov 1915. He is recorded as being 6ft tall and served in France. He spent 42 days in Wimbledon Hospital with gas poisoning and a further 27 day convalescing in Eastbourne Hospital. He was awarded the Military Medal.
