The son of Luther and Sarah, he married Marjorie Simmons in 1933. He was a keen sportsman and was Captain of the Dallington Cricket Club.
His Granddaughter Fiona: Having initially farmed at Fontmills, during the war he moved to Baker's Farm in Upper Horsebridge where he had a dairy farm. During the war he had Italian POWs drafted in to help on the farm- I note now that these may have come from the camp at Horam. On one occasion they were playing dominoes with some of the Italians and my grandfather (who was not the best loser) concluded the game by throwing the pieces into the fire! There was a language barrier and the Italians were reported to be quite alarmed by this gesture. Please see photo, it would have been taken around the time of his service. He was an honourable man, and was no doubt disappointed he had a reserved occupation, being an Auxilier would have been the next best thing for him to active service.
My mother, Dawn, was born in 1943, and we still have the dolls house furniture and a crib that was made for her by POWs, along with her baby bassinet in case of gas attack.
