Robert Chandler: “The Chandlers have been Ash for more than 500 years. I was a student in 1939 and registered for war service. However, I was classified as a farmer and, therefore, a reserved occupation, so I joined the Ash Home Guard. I was a Sergeant at the age of 19. I was recruited into the Auxiliary Unit in early 1941 following the death of an Auxilier. My commander, Colonel Newport, was not happy. My cousin, John Dunn, was already in the Patrol, having joined in June 1940. He left to join HMF in 1943, and was replaced by Swinford."
