His son John White recalled; "It is as I remember my father retelling the Heathfield Park event. He was with John Richards when they entered the Officers Mess. It has always seemed a pity to me that they were never given any form of recognition. After all, they had effectively volunteered for what would have been a very short existence if invasion had occurred. My father had a long range .22 rifle for sniping, a colt .45 automatic and a .22 derringer to go in his sock. He also had a fighting knife.
When he was in his 70s he decided to surrender the weapons, as there was an amnesty, and took them, plus 3000 rounds of ammunition to Hailsham Police station. I would love to have been a fly on the wall. His wife never knew what he did and thought he was in the Home Guard.
The bridges had metal loops fixed underneath to hold explosives. Most have probably rusted away by now. There were also various scattered caches of sticky bombs, explosives and other ordnance.
My father was a Nurseryman. He also bred homing pigeons for the army and his loft had a special trap for any messenger carrying pigeon. The capsule would be removed and he would cycle to the nearest army reception point."
