Thomas Stanley Brown

Mr Thomas Stanley “Stan” Brown
25 Feb 1912 - 26 Jun 1996
Biography

Stan was described as the organiser of the unit, suggesting he was a Key Man, or even a Group Leader. Most likely the wireless set was close to the farm.

In 1939 he was living with his parents and sister. His father was 68 years old then and likely Stan was doing most of the work.

An account of farming in the area records in detail the wartime changes on the farm. Permanent grassland five grazing dropped from 27% to 10% while the area growing corn rose to over 50%, with reductions in root crops and removal of fallow land and beans from the planting entirely. The lack of grazing meant some of the stock had to be sold, and with valuable corn being sold at the same time, meant incurring a significant income tax bill and impacting the capital of the farm for sometime.
