William A Dunn was the son of William Dunn, foreman at the Brora Brick and Tile Works of T M Hunter Ltd. His father had died in 1938, and William had continued with the same firm.
Ahead of his wedding on 2 Dec 1936, he had received a gift from his workmates, presented by Jack MacLennan, who would later serve with him in Auxiliary Units. He married Jessie Ann Ross, a teacher at Torboll and Inchnadamph schools. The pair had been bridesmaid and groomsman at the wedding of Cecil Ross and Wilhelmina Gunn, three years earlier.
William was a drummer in the Brora Pipe Band before and after the war.
When the mine closed down, he was among the 25 miners who took shares in the mine to enable it to reopen. He took a seat as a director representing the coal face men in the new company.
