Known as Ann, she was the daughter of Dr and Mrs Sidebotham and niece of the Traill's. When war began she was at boarding school in Sherbourne but returned to West Hill to live with her parents and siblings along with her cousin Gertie Traill, soon to be Gertie Hall.
In 1943 she joined the Woman's Air Force and moved to RAF North Weald, Essex where she was a plotter for fighter command.
She married Major Desmond Apthorp in 1958.
