Frank was the brother-in-law of fellow Ottery St Mary GP, Dr Ralph Traill. Both went to Charterhouse School, Surrey and then trained together at Guys Hospital, London. He was the husband of Gertrude Sidebotham (nee Traill, formally Cox), they were the parents of Agnes Traill and Gertie Hall was their niece.

A WW1 veteran, having joined the Royal Army Medical Corps straight from University in Nov 1916. The previous month his elder brother James had been killed in France. He reached the rank of Captain and he was awarded the British and Victory Medals. Ralph and Frank were torpedoed in the same troopship on the way to Mesopotamia.
