Fred farmed the family farm at Gate House in 1939 but by 1942 had his own farm at Shutterton Lane. The sons of Henry and Keturah Goodridge, he was the elder brother of Auxilier Jeff Goodridge.
A WW1 veteran he first served in the Devon Regiment before being transferred to the 51st Notts and Derby Regiment after a gunshot wound to the hand.
