He left and joined HM Forces 14th April 1943 and was sent to Sandhurst.

Hayter was a Boy Scout leader prior to war. Tubby Weymouth was a member of his troop. It was many years before what he had really been doing after he was called up was known about. He served in Reconnaissance Corps in Northern Europe, was at the liberation of Holland, and moved forward with Canadian troops to cross the Rhine. After the end of the war he was in Germany with The Commission for Europe obtaining the rank of Captain

Demobbed in January 1946. He had married Elsie Chaplin in 1935.

He started his career the health service with the Somerset Executive Council in 1928 as a junior clerk. He became a Deputy Clerk and then moved to a similar post with West Riding of Yorkshire Executive Council. He became Clerk of Cheshire Executive Council in April 1950. He was awarded an MBE in 1970. He died suddenly in 1971 aged 59
