George Manson

Private George Manson
28 Mar 1922 - Jan 1971
Biography

George was the eldest son of Hugh Manson, Postmaster at John O’Groats. As a young man, he went to sea, but suffered an accident which left him with a mild disability. Like the rest of the Patrol, he was a member of the Pentland Rifle Club and in later life donated a trophy to the club.

His father, Hugh, died suddenly on 7 Aug 1942, aged 52. On 11 Nov 1940, their home had burnt to the ground as the result of a chimney fire getting into the roof. The family lost all their belongings. Mrs Manson took over the Post Office business, but sold the attached general stores business to the Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society in 1946. After the war, George married Cathie MacKay in 1949 and they took over the Post Office at Canisbay, a short distance away. They also took over the merchants business from Alex Taylor, the former postmaster. In January 1971 he died of a heart attack, shortly after being admitted to hospital. His obituary described him as a man of strict integrity, always courteous and obliging, known for many unobtrusive acts of kindness.
