Biography

On Christmas Day 1941 at the John O’Groats House Hotel, he married Barbara Margaret Sutherland, the sister of his fellow Patrol Member. His cousin and fellow Patrol member, George Manson, Manson was best man. Their daughter, Elizabeth Catherine, was born on 1 Mar 1944. She would go on to marry John Robert Mowat, son of Patrol member Donald.

After the war he was a member of the John O’Groats branch of the Pentland Rifle Club. He was a good shot, winning the club championship trophy in 1947, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1967 and 1968. Fellow club members included all of the other Patrol members, most of whom had joined before the war. In 1967, while Club Captain, he won the New Year shoot and 100 yard prize and his son Frank Steven took the Junior trophy, with his cousin George Manson taking the 25 yard prize.

He was also a postwar member of the Royal Observer Corps, manning the Duncansby Head post with three other men. In 1962, he received the long service medal for 12 years continuous service, during which time he had earned six other proficiency awards.
