He enlisted in the Weston super Mare Battalion Home Guard on 8 Aug 1940 and sometime later he joined the Compton Bishop Patrol, until being transferred back to the 8th Weston Battalion Home Guard on 18th March 1943. He was later transferred to the 13th Axbridge Battalion Home Guard and was appointed a Lance Corporal on 16 Nov 1943 (the 13th Axbridge Battalion, was formed in May 1943), serving until stand down of the Home Guard.
He was awarded the Defence medal ribbon 21 June 1946 and his Defence Medal 31 May 1949.
He served for 12 years as Private 5665423 in the 1st and 2nd Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, at home and abroad.
