Born in Staffordshire to William, a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and his wife Kathleen, she was baptised in Cricklewood, London.

Hiliary married a Dutch Army officer, Lieutenant Berend Piets, on 5 Feb 1944 at Holy Trinity, Brompton. ATS Wireless Operators for Special Duties, Hilary Graham was a bridesmaid and attended in uniform and Beatrice Temple and Wendy Kaines also attended.  A huge amount of Dutch Army and Diplomats attended. The couple had twins in Oct 1944. Berend became a Diplomate after the war as Holland's first minister to Bagdad.
