The son of Horatio and Ethelinda, he married Florence Tremayne in in Chertsey, Surrey in 1919.

Known as Johnny he served from 15th Jan 1917 in the Royal Navy until discharge 15 May 1919. He is recorded as a very good character, 5 foot 6 inches tall (though he appears much taller than that in photographs) with dark hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion.  Served in HMS Ramilles as Stoker, based in Rosyth, Scotland.
