Known as Len, he was a member of the original LDV (Local Defence Volunteers) which preceded the formation of the Home Guard. He was also in the Observer Corps and the A.R.P. He was a teacher in Fairoak, Bonart Town and Church Road Schools in the Maindee area of Newport. He later became the Headmaster at Maesglas School.
