He had enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment on 5 Mar 1940 with number 6145917. He was quickly identified as a potential officer and sent to attend an Officer Cadet Training Unit. Men were not allowed to rejoin their own regiment on commission and he chose the Beds and Herts instead
He succeeded Lieutenant Martin.
He resigned his commission 27th March 1942, which is a little unusual. The exact reason is not known.
